26th April 2024 – Every year on April 26th, the world celebrates World Intellectual Property Day, recognizing the invaluable contributions of intellectual property (IP) to innovation, creativity, and economic development. This year, as we commemorate this important occasion, the theme of this year IP Day is “IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity” emphasizes the pivotal role of intellectual property in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and shaping a more equitable and sustainable world.
The journey of intellectual property protection dates back to 1883 with the signing of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, laying the foundation for safeguarding inventions, trademarks, and industrial designs. Subsequently, the establishment of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 1970 Geneva, Switzerland is the headquarters and its designation as a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1974 marked significant milestones in the global governance of intellectual property rights.
